Neil Young announces Second Song album with The Chrome Hearts

Neil Young has announced Second Song, his second album with The Chrome Hearts, arriving 18 September via Reprise Records.

The seven-track album features five new songs alongside two older compositions, "I'll Love You Forever" and "Casting Me Away From You", which date back years but have been newly recorded with The Chrome Hearts. The band includes drummer Anthony LeGerfo, bassist Corey McCormick, guitarist Micah Nelson and Spooner Oldham on keyboards, and recorded at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu with producer Lou Adler and The Volume Dealers (Neil Young and Niko Bolas).

The nearly 12-minute title track has been released as the lead single, with Young singing "I dream a way of living/ A way of sharing what we find/ A way of walking slowly through the smokey leaves of time."

In a July Zoom session with Neil Young Archives premium subscribers, Young said the new songs "all came to me while I was in Colorado around the turn of the year", before returning to Malibu to record them. Young and The Chrome Hearts cut all five new tracks in just two days.

Young told fans the two older songs "just seemed to fit with the new ones", adding: "There was no concept."

According to a press release, Second Song is mostly an acoustic record, in contrast to Talkin to the Trees, which was an electric album closer in spirit to Crazy Horse.

The album arrives digitally on 18 September, with physical editions following on 30 October via Reprise.

Second Song follows 2025's Talkin To The Trees, Young's debut with The Chrome Hearts, and the live album As Time Explodes, released earlier this year.

The Second Song tracklist is:

1. The Foggy Edge of Time
2. Day After Day
3. Earth Girl
4. Second Song
5. Casting Me Away From You
6. Soon I Might Be Going
7. I'll Love You Forever
