Maribou State have announced they will be taking a hiatus from music, signing off with their headline live show at London's LIDO Festival on August 31. The duo previously "pressed pause" on Maribou State in 2024, but this break is intended to give the pair proper time to step back from the cycle.
The duo will still play their scheduled shows this summer, including a stop at Forwards Festival in Bristol on Saturday (August 29) and at London's LIDO Festival on Bank Holiday Monday (August 31).
"After 18 months of touring this record, and everything that led up to it, it feels like the right moment to actually stop rather than push straight into the next cycle like we always have before," Liam Ivory told Mixmag.
"From my perspective this record came from a place of health struggles, so it would be a bit hypocritical to finish an album about resilience and then immediately burn myself out again."
The announcement follows the release of a deluxe edition of their latest Ninja Tune album 'Hallucinating Love' on August 21, which showcases new insight into the process behind its creation with a selection of demo tracks included. The duo overcame a series of challenges to complete 'Hallucinating Love', including writer's block and health struggles.
"I want proper time to reset physically and mentally, and to build a life that isn't entirely dictated by a touring schedule," Ivory said. "It's less about stepping away from music and more about making sure whatever comes next isn't built on the same unsustainable pace."
Speaking to Mixmag about the creative process, Ivory said: "Coming off the 2019 tour and going straight into lockdown was brutal timing. We'd been running on no sleep, not really looking after ourselves, then suddenly we were grounded with nothing to distract from it."
The duo's Lido show will feature their full orchestra and a big production, a format they have only performed a handful of times. The headline show includes Kelis and Folamour on the line-up.
The duo framed the final show as a marker rather than an ending. "We want it to feel less like an ending and more like a marker, a chance to give this album and this whole period the send-off it deserves before we properly step back," they said.
