Neil Young has announced Second Song, his second album with The Chrome Hearts, arriving 18 September via Reprise Records. The album announcement comes with an 11-minute title track, which is now available.
The album follows the band's 2025 debut Talkin' to the Trees. The seven-track record consists of five new songs, while the remaining two, Casting Me Away From You and I'll Love You Forever, are new versions of songs Young originally recorded in 1964 and 1965 with his band the Squires.
The Chrome Hearts, which includes drummer Anthony LeGerfo, bassist Corey McCormick, guitarist Micah Nelson and Spooner Oldham on keyboards, recorded Second Song at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu. The album was produced by Lou Adler and The Volume Dealers, a production name used by Young and Niko Bolas.
Young contributes vocals, upright piano, acoustic and electric guitar, vibes, mellotron, marxophone and harmonica across the album.
Young told Neil Young Archives premium subscribers during a July Zoom that the five new tracks "all came to me while I was in Colorado around the turn of the year". Young and The Chrome Hearts cut all five songs in two days, and he later checked his archives and found unreleased material from 1963.
Writing on the Neil Young Archives in April, Young said recording Second Song "was a lifetime experience" and that "every song of the seven released on this album is straight from the heart".
It has been a quiet year for Young in terms of live shows, after he cancelled a run of European tour dates and later explained to fans that he was "listening to my body". He will appear next month at Farm Aid, scheduled for 26 September at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater in Virginia Beach.
The Second Song tracklist is:
The Foggy Edge Of Time
Day After Day
Earth Girl
Second Song
Casting Me Away From You
Soon I Might Be Going
I'll Love You Forever
