Skepta Ft Jay Sean: Lush

Single Review

Now I don’t profess to being any kind of expert when it comes to Grime music, but I’m pretty sure that if you wanted a good introduction to the genre, this would be a pretty good place to start. British talent Skepta has worked with a whole host of Grime artists, as an MC/DJ and Producer, and is known for defining the early Grime movement in the U.K

For his latest single release, Lush, he’s joined by fellow Brit Jay Sean, one of our most successful exports to the U.S apparently, and one listen to this track and you can see why. His smooth R&B vocal really stands out in the chorus, adding a cool and harmonic dance floor vibe to the track. For the verses Skepta MC’s over some ‘classic’ electro sounds, nothing I haven’t heard before, but it’s still a good quality musical backing. The overall result is something I can easily hear in the underground club scene over here, and it has a definite stateside appeal too. For me, Grime standing alone as a genre is too heavy, and the magic really comes when soul or R&B vocals are fused with it, so I did find this quite an enjoyable track. Given the musical pedigree both acts have, it’ll certainly be worth listening out for this single, and any future work Jay Sean or Skepta do. It’s important to support our British music talent after all!

The single Lush is available from October 12th 2009, and is taken from the Skepta album ‘Microphone Champion’ available now.
