Rodrigo Moratto: Whatever Whatever (Single)

As firsts go, reviewing an artist who originally comes from a remote village in the Amazon Rainforest is pretty interesting, but the question is, will his music be equally as captivating over here in the UK, as it’s been in his native Brazil? My answer to this question currently stands at undecided!

Whilst electro/synth driven urban/pop records are very current, and going down well in the UK, for me, this record isn’t quite as original and energetic as some would like to make out. To break it down, the track features the distorted vocals of Rodrigo, and a rap which also seems to be over reliant on computer generated effects. It’s ideal for the clubs, although a little repetitive lyrically for my tastes, and I think there could’ve been a better balance between the synth sounds and underlying beats. There was a sense of déjà vu throughout, which didn’t dissipate while watching the video either. Steamy club scenes, beautiful models, and dance routines. I’m sorry, but it’s been done, and done better, so whilst I think it will make an impact, I don’t know if Rodrigo’s done enough to stand out amongst his contemporaries.  This is just one opinion of many though, so why not check out‘Whatever Whatever’ when it’s released on March 22nd, and make up your own mind!
