David Gest is a bit like Marmite, you either love him or hate him, but whichever side you fall on, sometimes he’s a bit hard to ignore. I think I can safely say it will be a case of ‘ignore him at your peril’ this time, as he has just hit the U.K with what could possibly be one of the greatest soul shows ever to hit our shores! ‘My Life’ was first seen back in January 2009, and now it’s back, bigger and better than before, with a quite frankly awe inspiring line-up of singers.
The Tour started on October 1st in Newcastle, and will continue to cross the country throughout October. The dates include sold out performances in Liverpool, along with dates in Cardiff, Blackpool, and London, the date we have chosen to highlight. This special London show will take place on October 14th at HMV Hammersmith Apollo and tickets are still available, so if you live near the city, visit www.hammersmithapollo.net and buy yours now.
The tour line-up includes Dennis Edwards and The Temptations review, Peabo Bryson, Candi Staton, Deniece Williams, Kim Weston, Percy Sledge, Russell Thompkins Junior & The New Stylistics, Jimmy Ruffin, Billy Paul, Freda Payne, William Bell, Jean Knight, and Dorothy Moore. Between them these shining stars have been responsible for classic hits like ‘You Make Me Feel Brand New’, Whole New World, Beauty and the Beast, What Becomes of the Brokenhearted, Me and Mrs Jones, Free, When a Man Loves a Woman, and many more great songs! It’s a veritable soul explosion, and that not the half of it!
Part of the show will be a special tribute to the King Of Pop, and long time friend of David Gest, Michael Jackson. All the cast will join together for a cover of Jackson’s 1983 hit ‘Human Nature’and a never seen before interview will also be shown. As David has previously had success with ‘Michael Jackon: 30th Anniversary Celebration’, this part of the show is something not to be missed.
David Gest will also be revisiting some of his finer comedic moments from ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’, so expect a routine packed full of characters like Chinese Girls with Herpes, Little People of David Land, and The Gospellettoes. In a further modern twist, David has lined up a selection of contemporary singers to appear, which for London includes Pete Doherty and The Rumble Strips. They will be performing a remake of a classic soul song for the London crowd, which will no doubt be a unique addition to the show.
It all sounds quite exciting, and we hear there may be more dates in the pipeline too, so many more of you will have the chance to enjoy this extravaganza. Music.co.uk thinks this is a show that has it all. Memories, Nostalgia, Celebration, and Surprise, are all part and parcel of this experience, and when they fuse together with comedy, and one of the greatest music genres around, you really have got the ‘Hottest Ticket’ in town.
I really wanted to dislike David Gest when I saw the show in Liverpool, but it was 1st class.
