Roll Deep Featuring Jodie Connor: Good Times (Single)

The grime scene isn’t one I’m an expert on, or expected to like, but Roll Deep certainly impressed with their new single release ‘Good Times’. For those, like me, who don’t recognise the name, Roll Deep is a Grime collective from East London, whose evolving line-up has included Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Stryder, and now features Wiley. They released their first album in 2005, and have since gained a reputation for bringing Grime into the mainstream.

I think in ‘Good Times’, Roll Deep might just have produced the part anthem of 2010, such is the up-tempo, feel-good vibe of the track. The positive, happy message of the song, is illustrated through lyrics like ‘9 to 5, when it’s over I can come alive’, and ‘gonna leave the world outside, spend my money, coz it’s gonna be a real good night’. It’s perfect when you’re getting ready for a night out, and will no doubt have loads of people dancing away at gigs or club nights too. The beats weren’t as heavy as I expected, the female vocal from Jodie Connor was strong, and it blended well with the rap/mc skills in the Roll Deep camp. ‘Good Times’ has the crossover appeal it promised, and also delivered on the memorable hooks/attitude. Very refreshing, and very much enjoyed, but don’t just take my word for it, check it out for yourself, and turn up the volume on this refreshing burst of summer.
