John Mullin – The Always On The Outside Of… E.P.

The Always On The Outside Of… E.P. is the Debut offering from singer/songwriter John Mullin. Hailing from Omagh, Northern Ireland, Mullin has drawn on influences such as Jack White, Fleet Foxes and Bright Eyes to create an E.P. that is a beautiful collection of melodic acoustic tracks with a definitive Celtic/folk feel.

Talking a different approach from his time in cult group The Basement, Mullin has collaborated with Bill Ryder Jones (The Coral) and gone back to his roots to produce a thoroughly honest and satisfying work. Title track ‘Always On The Outside’ has a quirky, upbeat feel, kicking off withJohn Mullin Dylan-esque acoustic guitar work and celtic overtones and with Mullin’s smooth vocals lending themselves beautifully, it’s easy to get lost in a work that’s full of reflection and nostalgia. The track is a perfect introduction to a CD that doesn’t falter throughout. What follows is more well crafted folk pieces that showcase Mullin’s absorbing song writing talent. The highlight of which is ‘She’s Like The Night’, an enticing tale of longing backed by some energetic finger picking that again is more than a little reminiscent of Dylan, but of course that’s in no way a bad thing.

The Always On The Outside Of… is an impressive first E.P. full of honesty and gracious melodies, released August 10th, the E.P. can be heard at www.myspace.com/johnmullinsongs
