Interview – Gold Skies Ahead

Gold Skies Ahead

Who are you, and where are you from? Who are your band members?

Jimmy (Vocals), Kenzi (Guitar), Jonny (Bass) and LB (Drums). We are currently based in Nottingham but we’re looking to move a bit closer to London in the coming months.

What genre(s) do you play? Which bands most inspire you?

We’ve been described as sounding like a lot of different bands so we tend to just say we’re a rock band. We’re probably still defining our sound but it’s probably rooted in pop punk with slightly more aggressive vocals and guitar lines. Right now we’re looking up to UK bands like Young Guns, as we really admire everything they’ve achieved last year and we want to replicate that success with Gold Skies Ahead.

Tell us a bit about how you formed. What attracted you to each other musically?

Jimmy – I moved to Nottingham in 2007 and set about looking for members to start a band. I met Jonny on Myspace and we started playing in various bands for a few years with both of us on guitar – yet we’ve somehow ended up on vocals and bass! We were in a band together for a couple of years and towards the end of that project Kenzi joined.
Kenzi – I’ve always wanted to be in a band with Jimmy because I felt together we could achieve a lot. We have that special chemistry brothers have. Jonny is a great player, so when we decided to start a new band, it made sense to keep that core for GSA. We’ve known LB from back home since we were teens and when we found out he was available we had to get him involved because he’s such a pro!

Were any of you in any bands previously? Any stories about them?

The last band we were in was really fun and a great learning experience. We got to play with some cool bands all over the UK, won a battle of the bands and really learnt about touring. The highlight was playing at Rock City with Glamour of The Kill and Yashin.

What’s happening for you in the next year? Any plans to tour, or release records?

We’ve just launched a new song ‘Queen’s Boulevard’ which we recorded recently at Weller Hill Studios, London. We’ll be playing some shows in March and then hopefully hitting the studio again in April to record another single and then over the summer we have plans to record our first EP and tour like crazy!

What are your ambitions as a band? Where do you see yourselves in five years?

It would be a dream come true to be releasing great albums and touring around the world in five years. We’re not gonna lie and say its all just about the music etc – In an ideal world we’d love to make it big and be famous rockstars! Making enough money from music so that we can make a living from it would be amazing. We’d all rather be in a band on the equivalent of minimum wage than have a huge salary and work a job we hate.

Why should people come see you live, or listen to your records? What makes you stand out from all of the other bands out there?

We think we bring something which is missing in the UK from the point of view of our sound but also our attitude. We’re not necessarily getting up to Motley Crue antics every night but we do think that having FUN is sometimes lacking from the UK scene at the minute. There are a lot of super heavy bands and indie bands in the scene. We’re trying to play music that is aggressive and energetic, but also has hooks and can be melodic. We go out live and work our asses off putting on an energetic fun show and our live shows and enthusiasm for playing music always seems to win people over, even if they weren’t fans of our music before.

All the best bands have enemies. Who are your enemies? Could you beat them in a fight? We need to hear about the beef.

We’re nice guys, but we’ve had issues with a couple of bands or promotors and venues over time. But we know no good comes of starting a feud or making enemies, So sorry, we’re naming no names! Having brothers in the band can lead to clashes though! Kenzi and Jimmy have been known to have the odd heated discussion!

Anything else you’re burning to say?

Thanks for supporting bands like us! Come to a show and say hi to us, we love meeting music fans. Even if you just want to tell us we suck we’d still love to hear what you have to say!
