British Artists Increase in Popularity

Music sales figures have revealed that the number of people purchasing music by British artists is on the rise. The three top selling albums of 2012 were all produced by British born artists; this is great news for the UK music market.

The debut album from Emeli Sande, Our Version of Events, was the biggest seller of the year; more than 1.4 million copies were sold. Figures released by the Official Charts Company have revealed that British stars continue to grow in popularity.

Typically the second album from Adele, 21, was also one of the top selling albums of the year and Ed Sheeran also had a highly successful 2012 in terms of album sales. Numerous other British artists were in the top ten chart, these include One Direction, Mumford & Sons, Olly Murs and Coldplay.

Music downloads continue to rise and the number of sales in terms of CDs continues to fall. The number of digital albums sold during 2012 was just over 30.5 million; this is an increase of 14.8% on 2011.
